With Neil Macbeth
Neil Macbeth has been presenting this program for the last 15 years. He was turned on to jazz in the late 1950s with a group of kindred spirits at Sydney University. He began playing drums with the Black Opal Jazz Band, which became one of the House Bands at The Sydney Jazz Club in the late 1950s & 1960s.
He has played on a semi-professional basis since that time, including several years with Frank Traynor’s Jazz Preacher, which was the house band at the Melbourne Jazz Club & at sundry casual dance venues. Judith Durham of Seekers fame was the featured vocalist with this group for some time.
He has played with many Sydney groups over the years at gigs & festivals. He is a regular with the Sydney Swing, & the New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra. The NWJO appeared at the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Festival at Davenport, Iowa in 1993 & subsequently at the Edinburgh & Brecon Festivals in the UK. Since then the band has toured the US on numerous occasions, appearing at Jazz Clubs & the Davenport Connecticut & Orange County (LA) Festivals.
Neil’s tastes in jazz music are eclectic but he gets a particular buzz from the masters of classic jazz & musicians currently playing those styles.
