What So Not – ‘Not All The Beautiful Things’

Our feature album this week is that of Australian-producer What So Not with his 12-track debut LP ‘Not All the Beautiful Things’.

What So Not began as a project between Chris Emerson (Emoh Instead) and Harley Streten (Flume) back in 2011. The duo were responsible for releasing EDM tracks from the likes of The Quack (2013), High You Are (2013), Jaguar (2013), Tell Me (2014) and Gemini (2015) before Harley departed from the project in 2015. Since then, Chris has taken full helm over the project with his well renowned remix of RÜFÜS’s track Innerbloom (which landed #30 in 2016’s triple j Hottest 100) and his ‘Divide & Conquer EP’ from 2016. Now he is back with his first album outing ‘Not All The Beautiful Things’.

Collaborating with the likes of SLUMBERJACK, KLP, Skrillex, Daniel Johns, Rome Fortune, San Holo and even Toto; the album is jam-packed full of group driven projects. The result of this, is an album that is both diverse and engaging for the listener.

Songs range from hard-hitting electronic tunes such as Warlord and Goh (feat. KLP) to more down-tempo tracks with Demons (feat. Rome Fortune & Tommy Swisher) and Us (feat. Daniels).

It is really refreshing to hear an electronic album which defies genre conventions and experiments with non-conventional approaches to dance music. I mean, I could only name a handful of producers who would even think of entering a music project with an 80’s rock group like Toto! This is clearly a reflection of the strength in Australia’s electronic music scene. A scene where artists are no longer asking ‘how can we make an electronic song’, rather ‘where can we take electronic music’.

Featured Tracks from ‘Not All The Beautiful Things’: Warlord, Be Ok Again (feat. Daniel Johns), We Keep On Running and Us (feat. Daniels).
