The ability to work with minimal supervision, within a small not-for-profit organisation, including understanding of the legislative, financial and technical frameworks that 2RRR works within is also required.

ABOUT Ryde Regional Radio Cooperative (2RRR)

2RRR is one of 460 community radio stations in Australia. 2RRR is proud of being a diverse, eclectic and inclusive station celebrating our 35th Anniversary this year. 2RRR is a small station governed by a voluntary Board of 7 Directors and staffed by 2 part-time staff members, the Station Manager and the Content, Youth and Ethnic Coordinator.

2RRR broadcasts over 70 programs with over 80 volunteers. Our license area is Ryde/Hunter’s Hill but our transmission extends far beyond this and, additionally, our programs are streamed across the globe. Our Youth Jukebox program is broadcast every weekday by presenters aged 14-21 years old. Our 12 Ethnic/Specialty programs reflect 9 languages spoken in our broader community. 2RRR’s well-regarded Radio Training Course (RTC) is held twice a year to encourage new presenters and programs.

2RRR STATION MANAGER Position Description

Position Title: Station Manager

Reports to: 2RRR Chairperson of Ryde Regional Radio (2RRR) Board

Supervises : 2RRR Content, Youth and Ethnic Coordinator (CYEC)

Terms of Employment: Part-time (22.5 hours per week) until 30 June 2020 with the possibility of ongoing employment. Future employment is subject to funding and may include differing hours and/or conditions.

Probation: Three months

Hourly rate: $25.00 per hour plus 9.5% superannuation.

National Employment Standards apply.

Purpose of the position:

The Station Manager manages and oversees the day-to-day administrative operations of the station, and works towards the strategic objectives of 2RRR with a particular focus on its legislative, administrative and community responsibilities. The Station Manager is responsible for seeking grant opportunities, grant writing and grants management. The Station Manager provides supervision and guidance to the 2RRR Content, Youth and Ethnic Coordinator as required. The Station Manager is expected to attend/oversee internal and external events as part of 2RRR’s commitment to community engagement. (A Time-in-Lieu system is in place for this).

Key responsibilities:

Grants: Developing, monitoring and acquitting Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF), and other, funding grant applications on a timely basis

Strategic: Drive the development and implementation of the 2RRR Strategic Plan in collaboration with 2RRR Board, staff and other stakeholders

Oversee the development of a new Strategic Plan 2020-2024

Station operations: Ensure the ongoing functionality of the station, and raise any significant requirements, risks or issues with the Board in a timely manner

Administration: Support the station by coordinating administrative functions including in financial, communication, compliance and operational aspects

Responsibility for the overall management and administration of 2RRR’s Radio Training Course (RTC) in conjunction with the Radio Training Course Coordinator

Community engagement: Working with local organisations and individuals, including Councils and other government bodies, to promote 2RRR and to inform station activities

Volunteers: recruit and manage volunteers to support the station operating to the best of its capacity, including communications with the volunteer base.

Volunteer gaps or changes in work requirements will mean that the Station Manager can be part of an interim solution. When these situations occur efforts should be made to recruit a suitable volunteer to fill the gap as soon as practicable

It is expected that, in a twelve-month period, the Station Manager will recruit a minimum of 6 volunteers for tasks associated with this position.

Operational activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as first point of contact, communicating with all station enquiries (including membership, volunteering, music submissions, interviews, technical etc.)
  • Recruiting, supporting and encouraging on-air and off-air volunteers
  • Maintaining and overseeing office administration protocols both in an ongoing daily basis as well as enhancing general procedures
  • Overseeing the upkeep of 2RRR’s digital presence, with focus on social media and the 2RRR website
  • Creating and distributing communications including a bi-weekly Newsletter and regular Presenter’s Information
  • Collaborating with relevant committees coordinating and developing 2RRR fundraising and promotional events, outside broadcasts, 2RRR’s presence at local festivals
  • All aspects of 2RRR’s Radio Training Course
  • Scheduling program prerecords for presenters
  • Other tasks as arising and/or directed by the Board, including monthly Board reports

Limitations of the position:

The 2RRR Board acknowledges that the station has significant time and financial limitations, which means that any occupant of this position will not always be able to fulfil all aspects of any position description. As such, this position description is intended to be used as a guide in setting work priorities and direction, as opposed to a definitive list of required achievements.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

  • At least two years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated successful Grant-writing experience
  • Management skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, conflicting deadlines and self-directed work flow
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Experience and knowledge of MS Office, website and social media skills and the ability to learn new programs quickly
  • Experience in community and stakeholder liaison (which may include community groups, Councils, volunteers, general public, event organisers, media and other stakeholders

Desirable

  • Experience in community radio, either paid or unpaid, will be highly regarded
  • Experience in managing volunteers
  • Understanding of multiple areas of broadcasting (which may include programming, training, volunteer coordination, audio production, sponsorship, etc.)
  • Technical experience relevant to a community radio station (may include broadcast technology, podcasting, IT)
  • Current Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain)
  • Knowledge of the Ryde and Hunters Hills local government areas.
